Although I’ve known for quite a while that I love to work with children and I love to travel, I hadn’t found a way to put these two desires together until I considered becoming an EFL teacher. I am so glad to have taken this course. It honed my grammar skills, which had become rusty despite several years of language study in the past, and it also gave me practical training in how to actually stand up and teach! Of course, I haven’t yet been able to put these skills to the test, but I feel confident that I have a solid grounding in the basics. This course has also provided me with so many resources to help me further my study of TEFL methodologies and classroom activities. I am looking forward to taking the TEFL for Young Learners course. There is a good chance that from January to April 2012, during my last four months here in Karamoja, Uganda, I will have an opportunity to be an english tutor for a three year old Kenyan girl. Her primary language is Kiswahili, but she is eager to learn english, and I’ve already been able to use some of my TEFL training in my casual interactions with her. I’m looking forward to putting my lessons to the test in the next few months with this little girl. I am also taking weekly language lessons in ngaKaramojong, the tribal language spoken here in eastern Uganda, and my language teacher is always asking for help to improve her english reading skills. I now feel more confident in helping her read and pronounce english words. I am hoping to find a full-time TEFL position either in Asia or in the united states beginning next fall. Long term, I hope to become involved in linguistics and TEFL training here in East Africa. Thank you for all the help this course has provided me!
