TESOL Courses in Arequipa - Peru
Location
Our TESOL course in Peru is nestled in a mystical setting. Arequipa, also known as the: “White City”, was founded over 500 years ago. To this day, its baroque-mestizo style buildings, built of a locally sourced pearlescent white stone, shimmer in the sunlight and dazzle visitors and locals in the city's illuminations at night.
The city of Arequipa and the nearby Colca Canyon are popular stops on the tourist trail in Peru. During your TESOL course in Arequipa, you'll find that the region has a lot to offer, from stunning scenery in the world's deepest canyon - The Cotahuasi Canyon - to the amazing Valley of Volcanoes, with over 60 mini-volcanoes rising out of an incredible moonscape.
The city of Arequipa itself, surrounded by a number of spectacular volcanoes, has a beautiful historic centre with the amazing convent of Santa Catalina. Inca tradition is brought to life in the small but wonderful Museo Santuarios de la Altura, where the ice mummy 'Juanita', an Inca child sacrifice, is on display. World famous archeological attractions including Machu Piccu and the Nazca Lines are easily reached from the TESOL training center in Arequipa.
The Colca Canyon was thought by many to be the world's deepest canyon until it was discovered that nearby Cotahuasi Canyon is in fact even deeper. Nevertheless, a visit to the Colca Canyon is an incredible experience, not just for the spectacular setting, but also to see the giant condors. These amazing birds, with a wingspan of over 3 meters and weighing up to 12kg, glide past on the thermals only meters away.
Outside the TESOL course, for those wishing to leave the tourist trail, the Cotahuasi Canyon offers some beautiful scenery and excellent trekking, and the Valley of the Volcanoes provides a landscape unlike any other. The petroglyphs of Toro Muerto, over 2,000 carved rocks under the desert sun, is an incredible archaeological site experienced by few tourists and well worth a visit.
Adventure in Arequipa is never far away, with plenty of 6,000m-plus mountains and volcanoes easily accessible for climbing, and superb trekking in the Colca Canyon and in the Cotahuasi Canyon. For those seeking greater thrills, some of the world's best white-water rafting is possible in the region, through the Colca and Cotahuasi Canyons. For those wanting to ride the rapids with a little less excitement, good rafting is also found in Majes.
Gastronauts consistently rank Peruvian cuisine and wine as amongst the world's best. The indigenous traditions and ingredients combined with European techniques and flavors have resulted in a delicious cuisine unique now enjoyed the world over. Arequipa's location amongst fertile volcanic valleys with easy access to the bounty of the Pacific Ocean have made the kitchens of the area particularly famous. In Arequipa, eating well is not a luxury; it's a way of life.
While Arequipa is Peru's second largest city and home to much of Peru's TESOL teaching work, the city has fewer than one million inhabitants. Furthermore, the relaxed atmosphere and friendly local culture make the city feel like a much smaller community. This balance, combined with average daytime temperatures in the mid 70s throughout the year have made Arequipa a popular and convenient choice in which to study, live and work, and a perfect destination for your TESOL course.
