Seville is probably the most famous city in the South of Spain and the capital of the region known as Andalusia. It is justifiably regarded as one of Europe's true treasures. The city is quite beautiful with some stunning and varied architecture, rich history, sense of style and also its vibrant nightlife. Legend recounts that Seville was created by Hercules and this is the very city that also brought Don Juan to life. Seville has also given us such famous characters as Carmen and Figaro.
Every year thousands of visitors come to Seville for the famous Semana Santa (Holy Week) holiday which takes place during our March/April course. During this particular course our schedule will have to be slightly amended to allow our TESOL course students to have free evenings in which to enjoy the colorful and fascinating processions.
During the April/May course Seville has a party week known as the Feria. This runs from April 30 to May 4 and the whole of Seville spends all their free time at the fairgrounds eating and drinking with friends. This is another very popular time in Seville and tourists come flocking to the city from all parts of the globe.
Seville is a very typically Spanish city in that it is a place where many of the stereotypical images of Spain can be seen, from flamenco dancing to bullfighting and the beautiful south coast beaches aren’t too far away. The people of Seville are very proud of their rich and varied history and traditions and they endeavor to maintain these traditions alongside their modern lives. Seville is certainly a very sociable city where much of the life types places outdoors among friends.
The actual city center is a wonderful maze of narrow streets emptying into beautiful plazas, filled with lively tapas bars and bodegas and often bearing architectural building which clearly show the Moorish influence of the past. The lovely river Guadalquivir flows through the city and offers an enticing location for evening walks and for river-front dining.
To the south of the city center you can find a beautiful park which is home to the stunning Plaza de Espana, interesting museums and a variety of other interesting places, which were predominantly built for the Ibero-American Exposition World Fair in 1929. This park is an excellent place for a sunny afternoon stroll of even a carriage ride.
The World Expo was held in Seville in 1992 and this event resulted in many improvements to the city. New streets were constructed, making getting around the town much simpler and also the high-speed AVE train was constructed which connects Seville to the capital city of Spain, Madrid in a little under three hours.
Seville really is the ideal location for exploring the whole of the southern region. It’s only a short journey to the important and delightful city of Granada (home to the world famous Alhambra). Also nearby you can find lovely beaches, attractive mountain villages, national parks and forests.
The sheer variety of things to do in and around Seville, combined with warm climate, the friendly people and the rich history and culture makes Seville the perfect location for your TESOL course.
