Chiang Mai, the capital of North Thailand and once the capital city of the Lan Na Kingdom founded in the 13th Century is one of the oldest dwellings in Thailand and is recognized as having an independent cultural personality it its own rite. Reflecting Thai, Burmese, Sri Lankan and Lan Na influence, the architecture of Chiang Mai lays witness to the diverse influence the city has seen over the centuries.Chiang Mai is home to 300 temples some of which date back 500 years. Expect to see gold clad spires, ornate wood carvings, and uniquely decorated structures.
Chiang Mai and the surrounding area is characterized by beautifully meadows and waterfalls, valleys and forests, and mountains and rivers, which originate from the foot hills of the Himalayas. It offers a unique Thai cultural experience for TESOL course participants and your free time here can be spent exploring the ancient city, and its magnificent surroundings.
Chiang Mai sits 300 meters above sea level, and this influences the dry and cool climate in the area. However, Chiang Mai still retains a tropical climate experiencing monsoons, which arrive from India at the end of May (23 -32 ºC / 73 – 90 ºF) and remain until November (19-30ºC / 66-80. ºF) During this period, it often rains for a couple of hours in the afternoon. From November to May, cool air from China bring the dry season with milder weather and during this period temperatures range from (13-36ºC / 55-97ºF).
With a population of 170,000, Chiang Mai is Thailand’s second largest city after Bangkok.

As a popular destination for a wide range of people, Chiang Mai offers accommodation to suit all budgets. At the lowest end of the scale, hotels can be as cheap as US$ 150 per month, but for between $200 – 300, your accommodation would be more comfortable.
