The beautiful, tropical island of Phuket (fortunately pronounced as Poo-ket) is frequently and justifiably referred to as the "Pearl of the Andaman Sea" and is the largest island in Thailand. Phuket offers something for everyone and it really is the ideal location for a TESOL course in Thailand.

Phuket is situated in the crystal clear, tropical waters of the Andaman Sea, just off the south-west coast of Thailand. Although classed as an island, Phuket is connected to the mainland by means of a bridge. Phuket has rightly become famous all over the world as a tropical wonderland and a water-sports paradise.

Phuket offers a wide variety of terrain which includes gorgeous lengths of white sand beaches which are gently lapped by the warm and crystal clear Andaman Sea with forested cliffs and mountains for a backdrop, numerous waterfalls and a great variety of flora and fauna.

However, Phuket isn't just about the scenery and beaches, as it hosts an amazing variety of water-sports, attractions, nightlife, and entertainment. Phuket probably offers the widest variety of activities that can be found anywhere in Thailand.

World famous diving and snorkeling facilities, sea kayaking, wind surfing, horse-back riding, bungee jumping, elephant trekking and hiking through rainforests are just a few of the activities that you can take part in.

As Phuket is a tropical island situated close to the equator the climate is tropical and as such the island offers warm/hot temperatures 356 days of the year. Days are either hot and sunny or hot and rainy and while the temperature doesn't vary greatly during the year the hottest months are usually from November through March. Despite the hot climate, the sea breeze helps keep the island pleasant even during the hottest days.

Thai culture is becoming increasingly known around the world and despite Phuket's popularity as a tourist destination, you will also have the opportunity to witness genuine Thai culture and lifestyle. There are numerous, attractive Buddhist temples on the island, outdoor markets can be found in many areas in and around Phuket Town. Thais love Muay Thai boxing and you will have the opportunity of attending matches, visiting one of the many malls, or just enjoy the simple life chatting with locals. Thai people are famous for being peaceful and friendly and it is for good reason that Thailand is named the 'Land of Smiles'.

Phuket is also an ideal location for visiting other provinces and regions of Thailand, as well as for traveling to interesting neighboring countries such as Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar (Burma). Phuket has an international airport and an extensive public transport system and so such travel is relatively quick, inexpensive and straightforward.

This tropical paradise is guaranteed to please just about everyone and with the incredibly low cost of living, a TESOL course in Thailand shouldn't work out any more expensive than taking a course elsewhere.

There is a huge variety of teaching jobs available throughout Thailand and in the whole of Asia - including some of the best paid jobs in the EFL profession - Phuket is one of the most popular locations to take a TESOL course and to find employment teaching English.

  • What travel documents will I need for thailand?

    Expand

It is advised that you enter Thailand on a 60 day Tourist Visa. Applications are cheap and turnaround times are fairly quick. You need to apply for a tourist visa with your nearest Thai embassy. Note that 15-day or 30-day stamps can only be extended by a maximum of seven days without leaving Thailand. Alternatively, some nationals can enter the Kingdom and obtain permission to stay in Thailand for 30 days (by air) or 15 days (over land) upon arrival.*

If you are from a country where visa procedures require a course invitation letter, one will be made available to you immediately after your intent to attend the course has been proven via your deposit payment.

    * As this information is subject to change at any time, we advise you to contact your local consulate for current travel regulations prior to planning your trip. For more information on obtaining visas please check with your local Thai consulate or embassy.

  • What is the course schedule?

    Expand

From Monday to Friday, class begins at either 9:00 a.m. or 9:30 a.m. Lunch is taken between 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. On days that you conduct your teaching practice you will plan your lesson between 1:30 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. and then deliver the lesson from either 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. or from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. These lessons are followed by immediate feedback from the instructors. Friday classes finish at 12:30 p.m. or 3:30 p.m. and the weekend is free.

  • What can I expect during teaching practice?

    Expand

Lessons are delivered to students aged 16 years and older. The vast majority of students are Thai but other nationalities do attend some classes. Class size varies from one-to-one lessons up to 16 students. Lessons are based upon real teaching resources found all over the world and you will have the chance to create your own materials as well. You will receive the aid of your course trainer throughout lesson planning and receive immediate feedback on your lesson after it’s been delivered. Practicum is assessed and a satisfactory assessment is required to earn your TEFL/TESOL certificate.

  • Who usually attends the course?

    Expand

We average 24 trainees on each course. The majority of trainees are British or American, while many others come from Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Ireland, South Africa and the Philippines. Occasionally, we do get fluent non-native English speakers from Western Europe, Scandinavia, India, China, Thailand, etc. Trainees must be 18 years of age or older and the age range varies greatly depending on the course.

  • Is there a dress code?

    Expand

During trainees’ lessons, casual attire is allowed. Thailand can get rather hot so this means sandals, shorts, t-shirts and other loose-fitting clothing, cotton attire is best. During teaching practice, you will need to dress in trousers/skirts and closed-toe shoes. Men need collared shirts, while women need to wear conservative tops that cover their shoulders. Men also need to shave or keep facial hair neatly trimmed. No visible tattoos or facial piercings are allowed while teaching local students.

  • What should I bring for course studies?

    Expand

Please be sure to arrive on the first day of the course with a notebook and a pen. We also encourage you to bring a laptop as we have Wi-Fi at the training center. We will provide all course materials for you so there is no need to bring anything else for the course itself.

  • What documents do I need for finding employment after the course?

    Expand

If you plan to work in Thailand without returning home before you do so, you will need to bring your original degree (if you have one) and any other teaching qualifications that you might have. While not required by all schools, it is advisable to obtain a local criminal background check and sealed university transcripts as some schools will want to see one, or both of these documents.

  • Do I need a degree to teach in thailand?

    Expand

The short answer is no. Thailand’s Ministry of Education (MoE) does require foreign teachers to have degrees, but not all schools fall under the MoE’s jurisdiction. Primary and secondary schools, both public and private, will require degrees as your teacher’s license will need to be approved by the MoE. However, university and corporate work will not require a degree. Teaching in one of Thailand’s thousands of language schools also does not necessarily require a degree. So while some sources fail to truly explore this issue and say degrees are required, you can rest assured, they are not required for all teaching positions around the Kingdom.
