This unit takes a break from the grammatical side of teaching English and is a reminder of all of the important ways to conduct yourself in a classroom when in a teaching position. There are many aspects to a learning environment that a teacher is responsible for creating themselves within the classroom. I learned other variables that I had not thought about before when considering the importance of the classroom environment. Tone, eye contact, and body language of the teacher had all been very obvious to me. However, things such as the set-up of the classroom and the advantages and disadvantages of certain types of activity work had never occurred to me. I realize now that there is a very delicate balance created between teacher talk time and student talk time. Students must have enough exposure to the native language, given to them by the teacher, to feel confident that they can create the sounds and words the same way. They also need to have the correct combination of various types of group work and individual work in order to be self-reliant with the language and to effectively be able to communicate themselves with others.
