This unit focuses on lesson materials and coursebooks. The unit opens stating the distinction between authentic and created, or non-authentic, materials, how we use them and what is their purpose. Examples of created materials are presented at the end of the respective section. Then the focus is moved onto course books, which are discussed more in detail. Firstly, the different components of a typical course book are discussed. Then the advantages and disadvantages of using a specific book are outlined. The unit then concludes with some remarks on what is the best use of a course book, what are the characteristics that a course book should a teacher look for when choosing it and, lastly, four different option for lesson planning are given.
