This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
The content of this course, gave insight on the topic 'theories, methods & techniques'. I got an overview on teaching methods that have been used so far, and the strengths and weaknesses of this method/techniques. An effective method, is the ESA method. Each letter in ESA, stands for a different phase in the lesson. During the engage phase, the teacher wants to get his/her students talking and thinking in English. During the study phase, the teacher wants to gain information about the level of his/her students, and cover any gaps in knowledge. During the activate phase, the teacher wants to put the previous learned material into a realistic context. The unit gave practical ideas for activities for each stage. I have learnt to recognize the different stages in the ESA methodology. I know the purpose of the different stages, and I am able to come up with activities that are suitable for the engage, study or activate phase. If I would need to prepare a lesson for young learners, I could consider using one of the other learning methods. I learned that the TPR method, where movement is introduced into the lesson, is a very suitable method for young learners.
