This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
This unit deals with problem situations that all teachers face and how to deal with them effectively. These include the first class with a new group or an existing group, warm up activities, students speaking their native language in class, addressing students with different English levels, teaching large classes, listening to English, and the rate that students finish activities. Teachers should seek to find out about their students in a first lesson, using games to establish rapport and perhaps issuing a questionnaire to students in order to find out their interests and English levels. Teachers should use appropriate activities for large groups, utilized pair/group work, and can appoint group leaders to help manage a large class. Teaching students with different English levels, teachers may group the class by stronger and weaker students or pair them together in activities. Most students use their native language in the classroom because they do not understand the lesson or are trying to explain something to a classmate. It is important to make sure all students can understand instructions and have enough background knowledge to speak English during activities in the classroom.
