The contrasting videos vividly displayed how a teacher can quickly set the tone for the classroom. In the first video, the teacher appeared bored, annoyed, and irritated. He showed no pleasing facial expressions and provided no positive reinforcement to the students. In the second video, the teacher smiled, spoke enthusiastically, and engaged with the students. The students immediately responded in a positive manner to the teacher?s demeanor and energy, and the students were more willing to participate. In the second video, the teacher also did a much more thorough job of providing explanations and examples. The teacher used gestures and pictures to help aid his instruction and elicit students? responses. It was helpful to see the stark contrasts of these videos and make note of the errors and success of this teacher. It was also helpful to see how a lesson does not necessarily need to cover a wide spectrum of information. For example, the lesson basically centered on the concepts of ?can? and ?can?t? in reference to animals, and yet it did not appear to be overly simple for the students or lack substance.
