Receptive skills are an important part of learning; however, I feel they are overemphasized in traditional, top-down or lecture based learning environments. Ideally, there should be an equal if not extra emphasis on student generation, as students are more likely to remember something they've generated themselves. Of course, they need to be exposed to content before they can generate something; that much is a given. But when students typically speak in the classroom for something like 15 minutes or fewer per day, there is likely an abundance of receptive skill use already.Again, as in the previous unit, the content of this unit is very useful and practical. The videos very clearly show what a difference the teacher's style, experience and attitude actually make. The same group of students can either have fun, participate and learn, or just sit through the lesson feeling frustrated. I remember when I was a student, I have definitely experienced both myself - meaning both class situations as shown in the videos. Which might mean that although all teachers-to-be have access to the same information, not all of them will use it in the best way.
