Testing and evaluations are useful tools in teaching languages. Before a course it can be important to test the students' level in order to prepare the course and to form groups. During the course progress tests or informal evaluation is used to check student progress; what they have learnt and what has been retained, and can be useful to alter the course if need be. An end of course test is useful to show students how they have progressed and give them a sense of accomplishment.
Aside from internal tests used by teachers and schools, students might want or need to take formal external assessments, such as the ones offered by Cambridge, or the IELTS, TOEFL or TOEIC. These are important for people looking to enrol in a university, move to a English speaking country and sometimes for jobs.
