For the first time in almost 40 years I have to think about what I say and why I say it. Also, I have to think about what others say and how that fits into grammar usage. I can usually tell when something is grammatically incorrect however the rules behind the incorrect statement or question is not something most people think about. I found this unit to be a bit of a challenge and am still not 100% clear on past perfect v. past continuous. I will need to re-read this chapter and do some additional reading in order to be able to teach with confidence.A good breakdown of conditional and reported speech grammar. To be honest, I've never considered reported speech as a grammar point. I've always viewed it only as a rephrasing. Since it's a rephrasing from a different speaker it would be rephrased to its contextual relation to the relative time of the reporting. In that case it is easy to understand the usage for the exceptions to the backshifting rule. Like your examples. Well I'll definitely consider it a grammar point from now on as I can see how it can create confusion for foreign learners.
