This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
Unit 12 explains about the productive skills:speaking and writing skills. They are both used to communicate. Writing skills require accuracy while speaking requires fluency. Accuracy usually used in the study phase are concentrated on producing the correct language. It is controlled to ensure accurate reproduction. Fluency typically used in activate phase allow the students to experiment and be creative with language. Accuracy based activities are controlled by the teacher and some examples are drilling and prompting. Guided activities is controlled by the teacher but not the exact language. Some examples are model dialogues and guided role play. Fluency based activities are created by the teacher but the output is controlled by the student. There are important factors to consider in writing skills: handwriting, spelling, layout/punctuation, and creative writing. In this unit I have learned that both writing skills and speaking skills need to have equal importance in the classroom. It is good that the chapter provided several examples on how to enhance the writing and speaking skills of the students. I have also learned that the easiest way the students can learn the receptive skills is by activities. They have to enjoy the learning process as well.
