This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
So much of this was not presented when I was doing my teacher instruction at UBC. The layout of the classroom, the different ways to set it up to make it more intimate and conducive to student participation, was invaluable. I have usually just gone into classrooms and kept the desks the way they are, not understanding how each configuration affects the students, except, of course, for the best way to maintain order and discipline. The amount of eye contact, use of eye contact, and nature of eye contact was so thorough, just recognizing the power it has to encourage students and comfort them as well. Also, the recognition that many students are too shy to speak aloud to the whole class and the ways to encourage them to slowly overcome this fear was refreshing in that my school district and province (British Columbia, Canada) has introduced a new curriculum that emphasizes the use of group settings and public speaking, without taking into account the anxiety it can bring to students. And lastly, the importance of rapport made me smile, as many of my colleagues do not understand the value of this and how it affects the learning that takes place in the classroom. This was a great reminder/refresher that I would share with all new teachers and old.
