There are many different methods used in teaching a foreign language. While all have pluses and minuses, there are a few things that stand out as universally effective. It is important for students to have as much exposure as possible to the new language, teachers must be there to offer new information and feedback when appropriate and a low stress class environment is essential for students to feel comfortable getting involved as well as receiving feedback in a positive way. When using an Engage, Study, Activate method of teaching, it is important to open each class with activities that engage and prompt discussion. This can be accomplished with a number of games and topics and should get all students warmed up to comfortably speaking in English. During the study phase or phases, teachers can provide lessons that teach new information. Topics covered can include: pronunciation, spelling, grammar, sentence structure and analysis. This is the phase when it appropriate to address errors made by students that are relevant to the lesson or may seem ingrained. All classes should end with an activate phase, offering students a chance to practice their fluency with their acquired language skills with activities such as role playing.
