TESOL Videos - TESOL TEFL Reviews - Video Testimonial - Mark
In this TEFL review video, Mark from the UK talks about his experience studying with ITTT. Mark took the 120-hour online TEFL course with tutor support and videos. He decided to take the course so that he could teach English in Northern Thailand. Mark had a very positive experience taking the 120-hour course and is now taking a specialised course in teaching English to young learners.
This is what one of our TEFL graduates feels he has gained from the course, or a part of it, and how he plans to put into action what he has learned.
At the beginning of this unit, we review a history of the more prominent methods and techniques that people have been using to teach ESL in the past. Then we are introduced to the ESA method which is an effective technique used in this training course. In the engage phase, it's important to get the students attention, get everyone involved, and make the learning environment fun so that the students can feel at ease. You can teach ESA in order, in a boomerang structure, or as a patchwork going back and forth to the different parts of the ESA framework as you please. It's important to switch up the order sometimes so that it doesn't become too predictable or boring for the students. In the study phase, the students study the new vocabulary, grammer, or whatever new material you are presenting in that lesson. In the activate phase, the students use the language they already know, in addition to the new language they have just learned, and do some speaking in order to put the new language to use. Many language games and learning activities are included. Giving feedback is an important aspect of teaching and knowing how and when to correct students is something that must be done tactfully. Correcting writing can be done with symbols which indicate what the error is and the students can then try to find the error and correct it themselves.
