Lexical approach, Michael Lewis - ✔️ ✔️ ✔️ TESOL Glossary

Lewis believed in a different approach to that of teaching English as a set of grammar structures into which vocabulary could be placed. He shifted the emphasis through 180 degrees, suggesting that the basis of language should be ‘lexis’, i.e. groups of words which are naturally put together (collocations). By learning about the lexical chunks of language these could be used for real communicative tasks rather than striving for grammatical mastery.  [Read more]

Originally when I used the recommended reference The Practical Usage English Guide by Michael Swan I though his use of the subjunctive present and past as separate tenses made a lot of sense in teaching English as a foreign language. But in this unit they simply skipped over the entire issue in the discussion of the second conditional and said the use of the verb 'were' was more formal than the use of the verb was. Conditionals are sentences that include the word ?if? and refer to past, present or future possibilities. There are five different conditional forms and the students may mix up or intermingle various forms. I think a good activity for teaching conditionals is ?chain conditionals,? because it allows the students to improvise and gets everyone involved. The second concept in this unit is reported speech. Students deserve this kind of planning because it is for their precious education and it is imperative that we, as teachers, continually self-check for success on all accounts. Falling short of my time frames I realized I had to plan differently whether my activity, or my age...  [Read more]

These are important for narrating a stories, recalling and recounting events, and explanations for past events. Past simple implies the addition of '-ed' at the end of the verb, although there are a number of irregular forms for words in the past tense that the students must memorize. Past continuous involves the use of 'was' and then the addition of '-ing' for its sentences. Past perfect tense indicates that an action that began...  [Read more]

Creating Materials In my experience of teaching English, I think the most fun I and my students had was with created materials, or realia, used in conjunction with the planned lessons in the text. As a photographer, I had a number of images that could be printed out and used in games, for vocabulary lessons and also as a basis for dialogues created by the students themselves. An article about realia by Stefan Chiarantano (2005) describes using plastic fruit, toy animals, Christmas cards, maps and other items to introduce new vocabulary to his young students. Cultural items, such as the Christmas cards, can also be used to teach students about customs in other nations. They are often very curious about other customs and their very curiosity will improve their attention spans and help them...  [Read more]
