This unit is quite complex, but I think it is a needed unit as an English teacher. I have previously learned about phonemes in one of my literacy courses at university, but I still find it difficult and it takes a lot of concentration and figuring out. Also I have noticed that as a South African English native speaker the pronunciation differs slightly and you may use different phonemes but this does not necessarily mean it is incorrect. From Unit 11 I learned about some of the problems students may face when learning receptive skills, and methods teachers can use to teach these skills more effectively to students. When teaching reading it seems it would be quite important to craft the lesson around whether you plan to teach the students to skim, scan, use predictive skills, or read in detail because knowing how to use all of these skills will allow you to read properly.
