I know the importance of a good course book out of personal experience. I live in China and decided to take up a Chinese course. The book we used in that course was dull and outdated; at one point I learned to buy new batteries for my walkman. Since I was intrinsic motivated to learn Chinese, and my teachers did teach me a lot of useful lessons, I didn’t drop out of the course. And as a teacher I’ve used different kinds of course books (Interchange is popular in China). But most of the time I use authentic material or design my own material because Chinese students (pushed by their teachers and parents) like to recite whole dialogs without being able to use the grammar and vocabulary in a different context.
