As native speakers, much of our language is used without conscious thought as to how it is produced, when to use, and how we choose our words. As an instructor, I feel I will need to critically examine my own language usage to determine how to best teach on the subject matter.
Additionally, I enjoyed learning about receptive and productive vocabulary--we even have this in our own native languages. I'm familiar with a number of words (thank you SAT) that I rarely use. However, knowing I can utilize them as needed is a type of security. This knowledge helps me to understand why it may be necessary to teach multiple vocabulary words (especially to more advanced students) so they have a range to choose from.
