At the start of the new class whether the classmates know each other or not it is good to begin with warmers to loosen up the classroom, establish rapport with the students and set the tone of the course. The first class should not be begun with course book work but rather finding out each students English level and what are their interest and needs. Some activities that can be done on the first say include surveys, questionnaires, pass the ball game and a needs analysis.
When there are different levels within a class the instructor should pair stronger level students with weaker ones and provide different materials for different groups. It is also possible to use the same materials but assign different tasks to different level students.
Some ways to engage reluctant students are use pair work, role-play and use a tape recorder.
