Our next consideration is that of giving instructions to our students. In order for those students to effectively carry out an activity, we need to make sure we have given clear and unambiguous instructions. It's also very important to check that the students understand the activity before you start. So some ideas when giving instructions. As we've mentioned use simple language. Secondly, rather than trying to explain an activity, then do a demonstration which is visual. Thirdly, try to use wherever possible common words that come up within every activity. These would be things like ?look?,...  [Read more]

The teacher assumed much in this first lesson, did not offer assistance, spoke too fast, was disinterested, and was not friendly. In the second lesson the atmosphere of the classroom changed dramatically. Because the teacher's attitude was friendly the students felt much more comfortable in the classroom. Teachers are advised as to how to use this approach regarding vocabulary and grammar instruction. When choosing appropriate vocabulary for students, a teacher should consider meaning, use, grammar, interaction, spelling, and pronunciation. Desk positions and the teacher's positions are subtle factors that play a big role in classroom management. The first lesson is an example of what a teacher should not do in the classroom. The teacher's attitude is wrong. He scowls, does not smile and is intimidating. He does not give instructions clearly, expects the students to do the work allotted to them without help and does not involve the students in the learning process. The students are left alone mostly to grapple with the lesson. The second...  [Read more]

In my past teaching, most of my classrooms were arranged as a whole group where students sit in orderly rows, so that they could focus more on my presentation and the important points, but I ignored the benefits of a dynamic classroom setting: small grouped seats will not only encourage more student talk time but also assist weaker students in an intimate way.
