I picked up the dictionary and sure enough, that?s what those symbols mean. I can?t ever remember a teacher or anyone ever explaining what those were in a dictionary before. Once with a grasp on what each sound symbol the indicator stands for, it will make it much easier to decipher what a word is supposed to sound like.Reading and listening require receptive language skills. I had a Love/Hate reaction to this unit. With regard to Intonation, I would inevitably find that my intonation was different from the examples used. (I seemed to rise where they fell.) I did, however, like the section on Stress and it was fun to re-learn some of...  [Read more]

I found the teaching ideas helpful and would definitely use roleplay games and a guessing game for signs to help teach students how to use modal verbs. The charts were helpful too, and helped provide a better understanding of the concepts taught in this unit.I was nervous starting this unit as I was expecting to struggle with the phonetic symbols. This unit proved to be one of the most confusing to date, with its coverage of the mouth and the phonetic symbols. The point of the chart and break down of the phonetic symbols is meant to make learning pronunciation easier for non native speakers. As a native speaker I found the chart confusing and unnecessary, my main concern being that adding this along with the regular alphabet when teaching would just be adding extra work and make it all...  [Read more]

Pronunciation And Phonology/phonetic Alphabet Issues - ✔️ ✔️ ✔️ ITTT TEFL-TESOL Courses

There are two issues that need to be stressed when working with the international phonemic alphabet. First is the fact that we are no longer concerned with how a word is traditionally spelled. Additionally we need to stress that we are only concerned with the sounds needed to correctly produce a word. So rather than numerous spellings, which can often be pronounced in different ways, we have one symbol representing one sound. Once we can isolate a sound, rather than juggling various spellings, we can work with our students on how to say that sound. Doing that successfully is related to manner and place of articulation, which will be covered shortly. To get a better understanding of the phonemic alphabet, let's take a look at our chart. In the bottom half of our chart we have our...  [Read more]

Due to many English teachers’ lack of confidence and training, pronunciation is the most overlooked aspect in English language teaching. After reading this chapter, I understand why teachers may be uncomfortable with tackling pronunciation because this material was difficult. Teaching and learning pronunciation is complicated because native speakers of English pronounce words differently than how they are spelled due to linking,...  [Read more]

There seemed to be quite a bit of information presented, especially the International Phonemic Alphabet. Learning the new symbols for the phonemic alphabet was not an easy task. I also learned that you should start with a killer engage activity in the beginning so that you are able to get and keep students attention. As a native speaker, my accent/pronunciation is my most valued commodity but it is not enough to just expose students to my way of speaking. Things like mouth formation and tongue positioning need to be explained to students in order for them to learn to do it on their own. Although it is equally as important as all other areas of speech. Students will stress that this is a main area of concern when learning the English Language. Many approaches can be taken when being taught, as well as learning. A very great source for this area would be the use of the phonetic symbols chart. Used for the sound of pronunciation in English grammar as apposed to focusing just on spelling. Although spelling...  [Read more]
