Can I get a work visa to teach English in Ecuador?
Ecuador is one of several countries in Latin America that has gradually become popular with TESOL qualified teachers in recent years. Although local salaries are not particularly high, jobs are relatively common in built up areas and the requirements expected of applicants are typically quite low. However, most teachers who choose Ecuador as their destination do so as it offers an adventurous option that is a little off the usual path. When it comes to getting a visa for working legally in the country the process might vary depending on your nationality, although for most people there are two clear options: a Volunteer Visa or a Professional Visa.
Should I get a Volunteer Visa for teaching English in Ecuador?
The Volunteer Visa is obviously the best option for overseas teachers who want to teach English on a voluntary basis within Ecuador. As Ecuador is a relatively poor country there are plenty of opportunities for helping local people to improve their English in order to get better jobs within the tourist industry or international businesses, etc. Many teachers choose to volunteer as a way to give something back to society and to gain classroom experience that will look great on their CV/resume when applying for jobs later on down the line.
The current cost of the Volunteer Visa is $200, plus a $50 application fee, although this can be subject to change. To apply for the visa you will need the following documents:
- Valid passport, plus a copy of the photo page, information page, and stamp of entry into the country
- Two passport size photos
- Criminal background check from your home country
- Visa application form
- Proof of health insurance
In addition to the above documents, the employer will provide you with a range of other documentation that you will need to sign and then add to your application. Once issued the Volunteer Visa is valid for one year, which can then be extended for a second year if required.

Should I get a Professional Visa for teaching English in Ecuador?
If you would prefer to get a teaching job in Ecuador that pays a salary you will need to apply for a Professional Visa, which is essentially the same as a work visa. The Professional Visa currently costs $400, plus a $50 application fee. When submitting your application you will need the following documents:
- Valid passport, plus a copy of the photo page, information page, and stamp of entry into the country
- Two passport size photos
- Criminal background check from your home country
- Visa application form
- Proof of sufficient funds to cover your stay
- A certified copy of your degree
- University letter stating that your degree was not completed online
All of your documents need to be translated into Spanish and signed by the translator in the presence of a public notary. Once issued the Professional Visa is valid for up to two years. After two years you can then apply for permanent residency if you want to stay in the country.
