For a teacher, choosing a course book and relevant materials could be a challenging tasks for their students. However, teachers should not all depend on the course books for whole lesson. Students may find teachers' materials more interesting and encouraging to participate occasionally as it could match the level of students' ability of language. Authentic materials Vs. Created materials English programs, magazines, newspapers, songs, poems, brochures, menus, videos etc are some of the examples of Authentic materials. Selection of authentic materials should be very carefully as they should be matched with the level of students. However, these materials can be interesting, motivating and helpful to gain confidence as they are taken from real life. Created materials are usually designed by teachers. However, it depends on the creativeness of different teachers. Crosswords, word search puzzles, role play cards, flashcards, gap fill activities and picture stories are examples of them. Student's book, workbook, cassettes, teacher's book, video relevant to lesson are the elements of a course book. There are plenty of advantages and disadvantages of the coursebook. What a teacher needs to understand is to get the best use of course books in following ways: - select a suitable one - using whole lesson according to the coursebook may not be an effective way of teaching - apply a right supplement and replacement from coursebook content to own contents as required - create a balanced lesson - don't only depend on coursebook, do some own research as well. Following factors should be analyzed before choosing a right course book: - Is it affordable by students? - Is it available in the context of relevant materials and book on its own? - Is design attractive and comfortable? - Does methodology adopt a right balance between study and activation? - Skills, difficult match with level of students, syllabus, topic and teacher's guide.
