Role of a TeacherThe most precious material in the world is the mind of a learner The role of a teacher in the classroom as a leader is to lead learners and their families to success. The teacher has the opportunity and responsibility to mould the learners in their class and help them become successful in their learning process. In this research article the role of the teacher will be discussed by looking at the role of a teacher displaying good personal traits, the role of the teacher in the classroom and lastly the role the teacher has in their subject matter. (Early Childhood development, 2001) The role of a teacher is to display good personal traits. Good teachers have many qualities to them, they love what they do, they are patient, kind and slow to speak but quick to listen. Teachers should be sincere, honest and open to changes and new ideas. (Early Childhood development, 2001) Teachers should display respect to all cultures, opinions and statements. A teacher should possess empathy, compassion and mutual trust. The teacher should always be available to the learner and help them to become independent and confident in their learning process. A good teacher always motivates their learners to give of their best at all times and constantly has a good rapport with their class. A good teacher involves all learners equally and corrects learners when necessary. A good teacher is able to address and provide for all learners needs and difficulties. (Early Childhood development, 2001) The role of a teacher in the classroom is very important, the teacher needs to plan their classroom in an attractive, organized manner, allowing learners to discover, learn and relax in a spontaneous environment. The teacher therefore plays many roles in the classroom. The first role of a teacher is a manager; the teacher is in charge of the class and the activities. The teacher makes sure that they create activities that allow for teacher and learner centered lessons. The second role of a teacher is an organizer; the teacher makes sure that all lessons are prepared beforehand, where teaching aids, activities, games, pair work, group work and instructions given to learners are organized. The third role of a teacher is an assessor; the teacher makes sure that the learners are assessed in a variety of ways, through feedback and verbal or written tests. The teacher makes sure that the assessments are fair and consistent and the teacher must always be sensitive to the reactions of the learners. The fourth role of a teacher is a prompter. The teacher needs to help learners by prompting them, allowing them to use their own initiative and not taking the initiative away from the learner. The fifth role of a teacher is a model. A teacher models the behavior expected by the learners and models learning. The teacher needs to be aware that the way they speak, pronounce, write and work has an impact and impression on the learners in their class. The sixth role of a teacher is an observer and monitor. The teacher is to monitor everything in the classroom, they need to monitor the behavior of the class, and the time given to learners to complete the work and the teacher needs to monitor the learners’ progress through the term and year. The teacher needs to observe learners whilst working, looking at how they interact with one another and observe them when working in groups or pairs and learning to intervene and assist the learners when necessary. (International Teacher TEFL Training 001,2011) Lastly a good teacher plays an in important role in their subject matter. The teacher must make sure that they choose activities to the learners’ abilities, needs and interests. They must make sure that a variety of teaching methods are used when teaching and the teacher must make sure that they display a sound knowledge of the subject matter they are teaching. The teacher must know each learner and their potential in order to give the learners the best learning experience. (Early Childhood development, 2001) As one can see the role of a teacher is important and it depends on the type of activity and type of pupils as to what role the teacher assumes.
