New technology in the classroom
Technology is one of the many resources available to teachers today and is a great asset in creating a productive atmosphere with in the classroom. With the release of new technologies in recent years the classroom has become an even more exciting place to be. Since the release of the iPad 1, in early 2010, touch technology has been integrated into the classroom through this and other gadgets. Along with that new features, using touch technology, have been added to the interactive boards such as the ActivBoard 500 Pro and the SMARTBoard 800 series. Other technologies such as 3D ready projectors, green screening and the SMART document camera 330, although not touch, still make new things possible in the teaching world. Using the iPad, and other brands such as RM Slate PC, allows the teacher to add all new elements to the lesson. Not only can spreadsheets, documents and slideshows be prepared but for the students there is a whole new world available in the App. Store. There students can download study guides, interactive lessons and even productive tools. The RM Slate PC has a built in camera which lets the teacher record and capture images which can be useful in documenting and recording student progress. Both tablets have internet software and connect through cell phone or wireless connection so research can be done, if necessary, in the classroom and opens the wealth of information of the web to be available instantly. Interactive boards have been used since 1991, and have become an increasingly popular teaching tool in first world and developing countries. They are now ever so popular with the integration of multi-touch/multi-gesture technology. This technology allows for intuitive pen and touch features, modelled on real life behaviours and gestures, which promotes natural interaction with technology. Due to the multi-touch technology more than one student can use the board at once therefore incorporating a larger portion of the students. Students engage actively with technology and information. The student experience has also been brought into 3D in the last year using 3D ready projectors and the SMART Document Camera 330 to incorporate 3D imaging into the lessons. Projections of visual images in 3D is a lot more stimulating and thus makes more of an impact on the students and they therefore retain more information. The 3D projections are far more interesting than the 2D projections that have been used for years. The SMART Document Camera allows you to capture images, along with display documents, 3D/captured images and even microscopic slides through PC, television or projector. These files can be captured and saved to file using the camera. Green screening is another way to incorporate visual and audio stimulation. By recording the audio or scene and then replacing the green screen with imaging or video, we are giving the students the full experience while they learn. Technology is being used within the classroom to make the environment as engaging and informative as possible. . The above mentioned technologies add an entirely new dimension to the class environment and allow for teachers to break away from monotony. Students are being exposed to both information and technology which in combination with enthusiasm and vivacity can prove to be an effective way for keeping things fresh and new, in countries that have the utilities to support them. With the rise of cell phone communication who knows what will be introduced to the classroom next?
