This unit covered the types of, and reasons for, assessments. There are tests to determine a learner's proficiency level prior to taking a course, tests to measure progress, tests to help the teachers plan future lessons and exterior tests. Exterior tests come from a variety of sources, but they measure non-native English speakers' skills in English. Some of the tests are specifically oriented towards a certain job field, while others test their proficiency in daily communication skills. I currently teach in Korea where exterior testing is a huge motivation in the society. It is a bit unfortunate because true fluency isn't largely a goal, test proficiency is.
