Unit 3's focus on methods of teaching and its descriptions of said methods communicates very student centered styles of teaching. While there are exceptions to this, nearly all the methods are less focused on speaking time from the teacher, and more on the student. The 'ESA' stages and their many appliances allow flexibility and an even mixture of student independence and teacher involvement. The three stages challenge students in different ways; the Engage stage warms up the class, and can help transition to the main point of the lesson. The Study stage is more structured, in that it focuses on the building blocks of the language. Here, students may work in groups or on their own through a variety of exercises that very directly relate to grammar, spelling, translation, vocabulary, and so on. The Activate stage provides a way for students to test their knowledge with more action based activities, like role-playing and debating. The ESA stages, while having their own guidelines, are designed loosely so that may be used interchangeably to find a more effective and student centered way to teach a second language.
