This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
Pronunciation and phonology were the subjects of Unit 13. For the pronunciation section, the unit introduced the International Phonetic Alphabet which is a set of symbols that represent the sounds of English words. The phonology section focused on the areas of intonation and stress. Before this unit I believed that as a native English speaker, I had enough knowledge and familiarity with pronunciation that I would be able to teach others with ease. This lesson however reviewed areas that I had not given as much thought before, such as the organs that are involved in human speech and how we use them, as well as using phonetic symbols. The breakdown on how to use a different organ or area of the mouth for each phoneme is what I will find incredibly helpful in teaching pronunciation.
