To start with a course, the student performs a diagnostic and then a placement test. They give information on their knowledge and level of English. After being placed, the first meeting involves going through the syllabus for the course. The teacher can make it situational or structural allowing flexibility if necessary for what students feel they need to learn (which can also be found with a needs analysis). The syllabus will outline the material or skills that will be covered throughout the course and also when any tests will take place. Depending on course length, the teacher may choose to do one or more tests. Tests can be aptitude, achievement, proficiency, or progress. At the end of the course, a course evaluation will take place for teachers and students for each to learn their strengths and weaknesses.
