This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
When first stepping in front of a class to teach, it is important to build rapport. Leave the lesson book closed and get to know your students. If they can trust you then they will be more likely to want to learn from you. Remember to not use the students native language, even if you speak it or understand it, this forces the student to think and speak in English. Be aware that students learn at different paces and you may find that while your students seemed to have started out at the same level there are now gaps. One way to deal with this is to pair stronger students with weaker students. Keep your lessons lively and interesting. Visual aids and games are your biggest help for getting to students to actively participate and look forward to the next class.
