This unit provided an overview of reading and listening (so-called receptive skills) and how to teach these skills. There are two modes of reading and listening: (1) for a purpose, and (2) for entertainment. Furthermore, this unit outlined five main areas that describe how we read and listen: (1) predictive skills, (2) scanning for specific information, (3) skimming for the general idea, (4) detailed information, and (5) deduction from context. I particularly appreciated the discussion on how to choose reading materials (authentic vs. non-authentic), how to assign comprehension tasks (e.g. jigsaw reading), and the detailed sample lesson, which gave examples of tasks for the Engage, Study, and Activate phases of a typical lesson.
