Some of these ideas may seem like common sense. When you are a teacher that is unfamiliar with the L1 of your students and they begin speaking in the L1, I can see how you may develop the false impression that the students are intentionally doing so to be rude to you or disrupt your class. While that could be true, it is likely not the case. I try to switch students up. As in, change where students sit if necessary. I may transition to a quiet activity such as reading or writing. Or, I may think of a gap fill exercise to get the rowdiness out of the students. This is especially helpful I find after lunch when students are not mentally at their best. Moving around gets their blood flow going and helps them to focus afterward.
