This unit concerned common grammar conventions including the use of modals, phrasal verbs, and the use of the passive voice. Modals can be used to express degrees of certainty, obligation, or to alter the level of formality of phrases. Phrasal verbs are frequently used in English and can be characterized by being separable (when the object can come between the parts of the phrasal verb), or transitive or intransitive (having a direct object or not having a direct object. The passive voice is generally not regarded as an direct and expressive form although it can have appropriate uses. The passive voice takes emphasis off of the doer of the action in the sentence. This can be used when the doer is not important or unknown.
