This unit focused on receptive skills, which are reading and listening; rather than productive skills, which includes writing and speaking. All skills are equally important to learning a new language. In order to successfully teach receptive skills a teacher should choose material that will interest the students, rather than material that the teacher finds interesting. It is important to vary the type of material used. This unit covered what kinds of materials teachers should expect to find useful, and the advantages and drawbacks of each. As a teacher who has mostly been restricted to using \"course books\" in the past (having to teach out of a textbook with a relatively strict timeline to do so) I found the idea of authentic and created material exciting and fun. I would like to try incorporating both into my lessons in the future.
