It's important to understand how students are responding when assigned reading or given instruction. If students are to read or listen to instructions for the days lesson, they are using their receptive skills for a purpose. Pre-teaching difficult vocabulary that is necessary to understand the text is a great entry into the study portion. Doing this can build confidence in students and set them up for succeeding in the lesson.A balanced combination of tests, tutorials, and course evaluations or \"check-ins\" may be a strong approach to assessment and course optimization. I particularly appreciate the power of the tutorial to provide information, to the extent that progress tests require work that does not add to actual learning. On the other hand, tests serve as a guidepost that motivates and orients the learning, and thus would remain essential.
