Pronunciation is a very difficult aspect of the English language to master, or even study, as it requires more physical aspects than just memorization of rules and patterns. The importance of pronunciation and phonology can quite often be overlooked, as native English speakers aren't constantly aware of what they're doing with their mouths, tongues, etc. There are many more aspects to phonology and pronunciation than meets the eye. In order to cover all areas you must explore volume and pitch, word stress, phonemics, articulation, and more. This unit also includes a look into native English speakers and the language. Just as with any other language, English has evolved over time. This has almost created two separate languages of the written and spoken word. Native speakers allow themselves to join sounds by linking words which, in turn, changes the way the entire sentence is heard. For example, common questions such as \"what are you doing?\" have become \"watcha doin?\" to people unfamiliar with English, the second sentence is completely unrecognizable. It is the teacher's job to familiarize students with this part of the language in order for them to have any chance at fluency.
