Reading and listening are receptive skills. You can read and listen for a purpose or for entertainment or for both. Reading and listening are not simply matters for eyes and ears, but also a matter of using our minds to understand words and process them. Teaching and learning receptive skills presents few problems: -language: usually reading is easier than listening because the students have the time to read the text more times and understand the unknown words from the context. We can help our students pre-teaching difficult/unknown language and structures and selecting carefully authentic materials. -topic: usually an interesting topic can help to engage and motivate the students. -task: a good task shouldn't be too easy or too difficult but it should promote understanding. The typical receptive skills lesson is a patchwork method lesson.
