This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
Grammar is terribly important to language acquisition. Having a standard descriptive grammar is important to understand, adhere to and to teach. Unfortunately, there is not a standard descriptive grammar. Some folks believe that what is not proper English is merely \"informal\" - this makes it difficult to teach. So, if a teacher knows the various linguistic descriptions, s/he is able to teach a broader range of grammar. For example, it is important that a teacher knows that \"Can I go to the restroom?\" is not \"less formal,\" it is not proper English. But, because some folks teach this type of poor English as acceptable, a teacher is required to follow suit and teach the same to his/her students. But, it is a service to the students to explain the difference, and to know the difference, between popular (and incorrect) language and traditional, proper language.
