The subjects covered in this unit reminded me of my own experiences studying a second language. When I was studying Japanese at university we would have weekly comprehension lessons where we were expected to read the text and answer questions before class before going over the answers and discussing it within the classroom. While there are pros and cons to this method, I believe the main issue with that class was that the teacher chose the subjects of each reading based on her own interests rather than those of students in the class. As a result, interest and motivation were often lacking in the classroom environment which led to dull classes for both the teacher and students. As such, the idea that the teacher must really get to know their students and chose texts that will appeal to them to make the classroom a more enjoyable and productive setting for all involved appealed to me.
