This is a fascinating unit. Reading has been one of my favourite pastimes since I was a child. I grew up without television, only books, and to this day believe reading is so important in assisting with spelling, grammar and vocabulary. Little wonder I was top of my English class during my school years. Having said that, of course I?m not perfect, but I have found this unit very important as gaining information and knowledge is only one benefit of reading receptive skills. It also assists with spelling, grammar and vocabulary, as previously mentioned, in a passive way. Breaking the reading skill down into its subforms of skimming, scanning, detailed reading, predictive reading and deduction is very important. They are aspects we do naturally for a given purpose as an adult, however, they need to be taught initially as each has a purpose and determining the appropriate form for the purpose is an essential reading skill. Listening is 50% of a conversation. Listening is just as important to gather the information we need aurally. Listening in itself is a skill. Too often we are distracted by others or disruptors and our focus and concentration lapses, thus we can lose the opportunity to gather crucial information. As a teacher, providing appropriate and interesting aural information of an appropriate length, will assist students in absorbing the information they need.
