unit 18: modals, phrasal verbs, passive voice. modal aux. verbs are used to show willingness, ability, capability, possibility. these verbs unlike other verb forms, dont change to indicate whether the subject singular or plural. modal aux. verbs include: can, could, may, might, will, would, shall, should and also their negative form. phrasal verb: a verb + a preposition or adverb which creates different meaning than the original verb for example: break down, ask her out, etc. 3 basic types include: intransitive, transitive separable, transitive inseparable. there are 2 active voices in english: active and passive. when using active voice, the subjects are the ones doing the actions eg: dog eats bones. while in passive voice, the verb takes an object eg: bones are eaten by dogs.
