This unit covered further grammar devices that will be necessary in teaching English as a second/foreign language, including modal auxiliary verbs, the passive voice, relative clauses, and phrasal verbs. We learn from this unit how to identify modals and in what situations they are generally used (to express certainty, obligation, ability, formality, etc.) and how to both correctly write and identify a modal form in different tenses. The passive voice is introduced and we learn how to identify the difference between the active and the passive voice through the agent/do-er of the action and how to recognize the passive voice in its forms depending on the tense. We learn how relative clauses are used to give further information or identifying features to a subject and with what pronouns they are often (but not always) introduced with. Finally, we learn about phrasal verbs and how to correctly use them depending on whether they are intransitive or transitive, and separable or inseparable.
