I can see from the present tense structure that the past tenses have a similar structure (relating to past time periods). Past Simple - Completed past actions at a definite time. i.e. Mark worked last night...When did mark work? Past Continuous - Actions in progress at time in past. i.e. I was cooking at 6pm last nigh...I was cooking when you called me. Past Perfect - Past in the past. i.e The ballet had started by the time we arrived. Past Perfect Continuous - Continuing action in the past up until an action in the past. Anna had been cooking for 1hour before we ate lunch. This section was very good in preparing anew teacher. It provides clear boundaries for use of different teaching aids. I can see how it would be easy to overuse some options which would have significant negative affects on the students. Too much course book use could be boring and cause students to skip class if all they are doing is regurgitating the book. The course book are an easy crutch for the teacher but can also inhibit growth in teaching skills. There are advantages to using the course book as a tool, especially for new teachers, but careful moderation is required.
