Unit 12 discusses ways to teach the basic productive skills of speaking and writing. Good speaking activities in the classroom are generally divided into three categories ranging from controlled where the teacher controls both the language and the output to guided which is in between and finally creative which is free flowing and focused on fluency. Accuracy and fluency are equally important and should be divided accordingly in the lesson plans where accuracy is focused in the study phase and fluency in the other stages. Speaking and writing is both equally important; however, writing is often left out due to the fact it is â€œquiet timeâ€ in the classroom and this should be alleviated. Handwriting, spelling, and punctuation and the difficulty to teach this is generally due to the difference in writing styles and alphabets of the studentâ€™s native language. Spelling in English can be especially difficult because sounds donâ€™t always mean what the letters indicate and often have exceptions/differences.
