This unit covered the topic of conditionals and the difference between direct and reported speech. Conditionals are composed of two clauses: one that holds the condition that must be met and one that is the consequence of the other being met. The zero conditional is used for facts. The first conditional is used when referring to possible future events. The second conditional is used for hypothetical future events. The third conditional is used for hypothetical past events. There are also mixtures of these, the most common being a combination of the second and third. Different teaching ideas for conditionals include: matching and completing sentences, chain conditional games and role plays. The main difference between reported speech and direct speech is that direct speech uses quotations and reported speech is usually backshifted (set a tense back from what is said). Students often struggle to understand how to change the different tenses so it is essential to teach them one at a time and go very slowly.
