In this unit we covered the essential qualities all good teachers should have as well as the different roles a teacher should play in the classroom. Compassion and empathy for students was stressed throughout the lesson. It was explained that although subject knowledge and teaching ability are of great importance they should never supersede the importance of actually caring about the learning being done by the students. We also learned about a variety of qualities all good learners will have. It was brought to our attention that both age and language ability will affect the learning environment in our classroom and a good teacher will be sure to adapt to these different environments so as to provide a pleasant and effective learning experience for all students regardless of age and ability. For instance, adult students, in comparison to younger students, are often times more intrinsically motivated to do well in the language class because they have chosen to take the class by their own volition.
