Unit 5 covers the topic of classroom management. Managing a classroom involves finding a balance between maintaining discipline and a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. This is largely created through establishing rapport with one's students. This is accomplished through a variety of means including demonstrating confidence as a teacher, showing enthusiasm for teaching and personal interest in one's students, following through with discipline, as well as mixing up group, pair, and individual work, etc. Teachers can also prevent behavior problems through classroom management. Changing seating arrangements, balancing students vs. teacher talk time, and paying attention to how instructions are given are all ways to help prevent students from becoming confused, bored, or disruptive. Teachers can not remove all sources of poor behavior however, such as family problems or class sizes. But they can manage their classes to the best of their ability by keeping the main points from this unit in mind.
